PROFESSOR T. W. ANDERSON

THEODORE WILBUR ANDERSON was born on June 5, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received an A.A. degree from North Park College, Chicago, in 1937, a B.S. degree in Mathematics (with Highest Distinction) from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in 1939, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University in 1942 and 1945, respectively. His Ph.D. thesis was entitled “The Non-Central Wishart Distribution and Its Application to Problems in Multivariate Statistics”; supervisor was Professor Samuel S. Wilks.

From 1946 to 1967 T. W. Anderson was a faculty member of the Department of Mathematical Statistics at Columbia University, New York City, becoming a Professor in 1956. Since 1967, he has been Professor of Statistics and Economics at Stanford University, becoming Emeritus Professor in 1988.

Professor Anderson is the author of An Introduction to Multivariate Statistical Analysis (1st ed. 1958, 2nd ed. 1984, 3rd ed. 2003) and The Statistical Analysis of Time Series (1971). Among other books are The New Statistical Analysis of Data (with Jeremy D. Finn), An Introduction to the Statistical Analysis of Data (with Stanley L. Sclove), and A Bibliography of Multivariate Statistical Analysis (with Somesh Das Gupta and George P. H. Styan). Professor Anderson is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Statistical Association, the Econometric Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The Collected Papers of T. W. Anderson: 1943-1985 (edited by George P. H. Styan) were published by Wiley in 1990, comprising 109 papers and 16 commentaries, in a 2-volume set covering 1681 pages. Interviews of Professor Anderson have appeared in Statistical Science (1986) and in Econometric Theory (1986).
